Washabelle Mattress Review for 2021: Reasons to buy (or avoid!)

The Washabelle mattress has sadly been discontinued. However, if you are interested in a fully washable mattress, you must check out Airweave! This incredibly washable mattress is very similar to the Washabelle.

We have reviewed many kid mattresses and Washabelle is still our favorite. Why? Because it is an excellent value at $399 and because it is, like the name suggests, so incredibly washable. Raising kids is a dirty job and the creators of Washabelle have undoubtedly experienced the frustration of trying to clean a child’s mattress! Be it a sick child who has vomited, had a potty-training accident or spilled food and drinks in bed, the Washabelle mattress contains different layers that can easily be thrown into the washing machine and dried. As the mom of very active children, I am very excited about the washable mattress from Washabelle!

Overview

The economical Washabelle mattress is a twin-sized mattress that is perfect for very active children who cause messes! It contains six different layers, most of which are washable. Since this mattress is meant for children, it is quite soft and light weight; an adult who sleeps on this mattress might not find it supportive enough. Some parents may ask, why not just put a waterproof cover over a conventional mattress? Most covers that are truly waterproof are noisy and frankly, uncomfortable. I have had the problem of my children removing their mattress protector, trying to get more comfortable in their beds. I have also had other waterproof protectors tear and allow moisture to go down into my child’s mattress.

Layers

Washabelle’s top cover can be removed by unzipping its very durable zipper. Underneath the cover are two layers of washable memory foam that are quite lightweight and pliable. Under those two layers is a waterproof layer of fabric that protects the foam base beneath it. This foam base is what gives the mattress its shape and overall support. This section should not be thrown into the washer and dryer.  At the bottom is the cover, which holds the layers together.

Washing the Mattress

The cover and two layers of washable memory foam are very easy to unzip, remove and throw into the wash! The foam base is not washable, but I did lay it outside in the sun to air it out while the other layers were being washed. The layers can even be thrown into the dryer for faster laundering! If you are an eco-minded parent, you may choose to air-dry those memory foam layers, too. Afterwards, I put the two layers of memory foam over the foam base and placed the cover over the layers. The cover zipped up easily over the layers and the mattress came back together quickly and relatively easily.

Don’t Just Take My Word for It

Washabelle has lots of enthusiastic reviews on their website from satisfied parents, including one that I can truly identify with:

This mattress is a great solution. Our previous mattress is covered in stains. We had protectors on it, but they kept ripping within a few months of purchase and urine would seep through. It is nice to have a washable mattress for such situations!
